Community and Environment

It's not how much you make during your life, It's how much you make a difference.

Martin Dolan

At mArty Gallery we enjoy what we do...

Sir Richard Branson, Martin Dolan and Paul Wright at the Virgin Charity Ball - Brisbane, Australia. 2006Combining Sci-fi sculpture, science fiction art and Business is fun and it's very rewarding when you get the opportunity to spend time chatting with people like Sir Richard Branson, but there is a serious side to life too.

It's not how much you make during your life,
It's how much you make a difference.

There are many ways you can give back to the community and it's not just about giving money either.

Let me ask you a question. . .

If you woke up tomorrow in Richard Branson's Bed - In his body, with his mindset, what would your focus be for the day?  Would you run your life or your business differently?

I am sure you have heard of the saying "If you help enough people get what they want, you will get what you want."

That philosophy became blatantly obvious when chatting with Richard.  It is an integral part of his being. It's even the Motto of BNI (Business Networks International) where they say "Givers Gain"

When it comes to helping the local or global community, sometimes the greatest gift can be more than financial.  You can earn money, spend it and then earn it back again. .   Time on the other hand can only be spent once, and therefore is your greatest asset and gift.

Environment

Climate change is a serious problem affecting all of us.  Some believe that our current carbon dioxide emission levels are causing global warming and are unsustainable for the planet.

Without wanting to get into the debate of  "Is global warming real, and what is causing it",  just consider this.  Whatever you believe, wouldn't it be good if everyone made it a goal to be nice to the planet?

Going carbon neutral is an easy way that we can all contribute to a solution by taking responsibility for the carbon dioxide emissions we create with our cars, airplanes and energy use.

Everyone behind the scenes at mArty Gallery make a difference by recylcing and reducing our 'carbon footprint' as much as possible, and planting trees to make up for the rest.  We aim to be carbon neutral.

I have seen worlds where the environment was not a top priority.  The "care-takers" of those worlds didn't choose to "take care".  Don't get me wrong, life still exists in some form or other on those planets...
...Just not in a way that allowed the previous so called "care-takers" to survive.

If you would like to care for and contribute to your community, here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling...

Martin Dolan donating platelets at the local Red Cross Blood Bank

  • Instead of putting $5 in a collection tin for your favourite charity, why not go doorknocking or collecting on their behalf for half a day.
  • Donate some of your business services to the local charity as a prize in a raffle or auction.
  • Spend an hour or so donating Blood, Plasma or Platelets. A simple way to save lives.
  • Think 'Green' where you can, it could save a few bucks, and who knows, might even save the planet. (Unless you know of a better place to live)
  • Volunteer in a 'soup' kitchen - perhaps on Christmas day.
  • Aim to make at least one person laugh a day.

Charities and Organisations We Proudly Support

Australian Red Cross Logo
Australian Red Cross

Over 30% of people will require blood at some stage in their lifetime, yet only 3% of the Australian population are blood donors.

Blood is needed every single day by cancer patients, people with heart disease, people with kidney, stomach and bowel disease, for new born babies, pregnant women and for burns and accident victims.
Donate and spend an hour to save 3 lives,
...or bring a friend and and save 6 lives!

Virgin Unite Logo
Virgin Unite

Virgin Unite is the independent charitable arm of the Virgin Group, created to unite people and Virgin's global resources.
Through it, they plan to create a mass movement of people from across the globe, to get hands on involved with some amazing charitable organisations, the Unite Partners.  They know what works; all they need is our support and energy to spread their success.

 Child Fund Australia Logo
Child Fund Australia

Over 30,000 children under the age of five die every day.
This frightening and tragic statistic is a direct result of poverty.
According to the latest figures from the United Nations:

  • Poor nutrition results in 50% of children under five dying from an infectious disease
  • 1.8 million children die from diarrhoea caused by a lack of clean water and sanitation
  • 10 million children die preventable deaths each year.
By becoming a child sponsor, you can give a child a brighter future by providing food, healthcare, education and safe water.

 Heart Foundation Logo
Heart Foundation

Cardiovascular disease (heart, stroke and blood vessel disease) is the leading cause of death and disability in Australia, claiming the lives of 50,294 people in 2002, or 38% of all deaths.

  • Around 3.67 million Australians are affected by cardiovascular disease.
  • 1.10 million Australians are disabled long-term by cardiovascular disease.
You can support the Heart foundation by a monetary donation, or why not donate something even more valuable... YOUR TIME and join in the Doorknock Appeal !
