From Science Fiction to FACT

Cool science fiction that has just become science fact.

Along with other Sci-Fi artists sculpture and art, science fiction TV, Movies and books...

Every so often, and increasing in frequency these days, some of that cool stuff in Sci-Fi movies, books and peoples imagination make the leap and becomes a reality. Let's face it - everything in this world started off as an idea or inspiration at one stage. Even serendipitous accidents turn into something by thinking outside the box. I am sure you have heard of the Velcro story. A grass seed getting stuck in someone's sock leads to the invention. Since then, others have come up with thousands of uses for Velcro. The humble yellow Post-it or sticky note - started out when someone at 3M was trying to invent a very sticky glue. They ended up with something barely sticky at all, and put it to good use.

What excites me are the Science Fiction inspired inventions. Ideas people have dreamed about for years, and then one day someone makes it happen.

Here you will find these stories too...

Muse - Sci-fi music video out of this world

Written by Martin Dolan

Muse - Sing for Absolution Sci-Fi Music VideoMuse - Sci-fi music video is out of this world

Sci-fi and music videos can be a lame tacky experience ...but not where Muse is concerned.

Sing for Absolution is one of my favorites.

I have heard Muse get a lot of air time on Triple J - the national radio station in Australia, and loved it.  Muse has epic songs, reminiscent of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and in more recent times, the music of RadioHead.

It's the sort of music that slowly builds to a full on aural experience. Top it all of with a crackin' Sci-fi Music video, and I am sold.

New Accident in Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN

Written by Martin Dolan

LHC Proton Collision photo - CartoonThere has just been an unfortunate accident in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN

- Unfortunate that is for the protons that just had a head on collision.

Yes folks, the LHC has just had its first collision - and even though it was just a small one (in relative terms) of 900 billion electron volts they expect to have one at 1.2 trillion electron volts (TeV) early next year and then build up to some very decent collisions of 7 TeV after that.

What might we discover from the LHC?

Anything from our whole theory of physics is fundamentally wrong - and we need to go back to the drawing board.
  - Or - Confirmation of new particles such as the Higgs Boson, how mass and gravity work, how to control it, other dimensions and even the currently science fiction inspired anti-gravity or the thrill of intergalactic travel.
While that last one might be a long way off, however it goes, the collisions are going to be exciting!

Alien Abduction lamp has arrived!

Written by Martin Dolan

View: Alien Abduction Lamp ArtworkAlien Abduction lamp has arrived!

The Alien Abduction Lamp was a concept years ago, and it is now a reality - Glowing green aliens look out the window of their shiny silver UFO as they levitate a bewildered looking cow of the ground.

This science fiction sculpture artwork is designed by Lasse Kleinit and is something to behold!

I hear the Aliens are vegetarian, so no harm will come to this bovine, and as the initial product run is only 2000 you better get in quick before they are all spirited away!

Outbound - 'The Science Fiction Comics Anthology' - A Review

Written by Martin Dolan

Artwork of Outbound - 'The Science Fiction Comics Anthology' - Cover by Marcelo BuchelliScience fiction comics, are few and far between. Outbound - 'The Science Fiction Comics Anthology' was a highly anticipated treat.

Most comics I have found focus on the realms of fantasy, so I was eager to read something with a heart of true sci-fi.

In fact after driving into town to pick it up from the post office, I sat in the car for 20 minutes reading it before I pulled out of my parking space. I literally could not put it down.

Outbound is a mix of comics by various authors and artists, short stories, a great interview with 'Hunter Prey' director Sandy Collora, and...

Are the Sci-Fi screening TV networks making it hard on themselves?

Written by Martin Dolan

Battlestar Galactica Sci-fi The Last SupperAre the Sci-Fi screening TV networks making it hard on themselves?
Creating a self-fulfilling belief that sci-fi is a hard sell?

They move science fiction shows around to different time slots, different days, different networks, or cancel them half way through a season.

I don’t want to invest my time in starting to watch something and then get dicked around.

Case in point, I waited till the last episode of the last season of Battlestar Galactica, made sure it got good reviews, made sure the season actually had an end and didn’t get "Firefly-'ed" half way through - Then went out and bought it on DVD.
Well actually told someone I wanted it for my birthday. Smile

I am nearly through season one of Battlestar Galactica and loving it.

Last night was episode 2 of the new science fiction series, Flash Forward in Australia

I watched the first episode of Flash Forward last week - and it was good. But here is the dilemma - do I take the risk in starting to watch it?

I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.
