Sci-fi SmackDown Season - Cowboys & Aliens vs Battle: Los Angeles

Written by Martin Dolan

Sci-fi SmackDown Season - Cowboys & Aliens vs Battle: Los  Angeles

The new trailer for Cowboys & Aliens is out, hot on the heals of the Battle: LA trailer from a few weeks back.

2011 seems like it will be a good time to be a science fiction fan, as there could be some great movies coming out.

First a disclaimer - I have NOT seen either of these two movies yet, and i KNOW if there is one thing Hollywood can do, is make a fantastic trailer for a movie. Following through and coming up with the goods, not so much.

That said, I have a good feeling about these two...   (a third movie, Skyline which is currently screening, I might wait for the Blu-Ray of that one).  So here is the synopsis, further info and a kick ass trailer for each.

What can I say but James Bond vs frikkin Indiana Jones!

Yes, seeing Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford kicking some Alien butt should be fun. At first I though it would be a stupid concept, but the trailer (read disclaimer above) has swung me around.  Cowboys and Aliens is directed by Jon Favreau - who I have had massive respect for since I first saw him in Swingers.
It also stars Sam Rockwell of  Moon and Galaxy Quest fame.

Cowboys and Aliens storyline:

The Old West.. where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world. 1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don't welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It's a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been...

Battle: Los Angeles (Battle: LA)Battle Los Angles Sci-fi movie poster artwork - Aaron Eckhart

Battle: Los Angeles stars Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan and Aaron Eckhart - so there is some good talent in it.

Judging by the trailer will be a spectacular Action / Sci-Fi movie with some breathtaking cinematography too.

(Watch out for the scene where the helicopters fly over the beach, surrounded by air-bursts.

Battle: Los Angles storyline:

A Marine platoon faces off against an alien invasion in Los Angeles.

The Film is inspired by "The Battle of Los Angeles", or "The Great Los Angeles Air Raid" a rumoured enemy attack causing an anti-aircraft artillery barrage on 24th and 25th of February 1942 over Los Angeles.  A navy press conference shortly after the incident had it labelled as a false alarm due to "war nerves" as Japan had only just attacked Pearl Harbor around two months earlier.  Many newspapers at the time reported a sensational cover up, and UFOlogists to this day say the targets were extraterrestrial spacecraft.

You can see a similarity between the movie promotional poster and the LA Times article from 1942
